2. What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Personal data means all data that can relate to you personally, such as your name, address, e-mail account(s), user behaviour, technical data or information about cookies. We only collect and use our website visitors’ data in so far as it is necessary to provide a functional website. The collection and use of our users’  data take place regularly and only with the users’ consent. An exception applies in those cases where prior consent cannot be obtained for real reasons and, the processing of the data is permitted by law.

 

2.a Technical information transmitted while using our website

Every time you visit our website, our system automatically collects data and information from the computer system of the calling computer. We collect the following data in our log files for technical processes to be able to deliver our website to you and to ensure adequate access stability and security (the legal basis is Article 6 Paragraph 1 Section (1) Letter (f) of the GDPR):

  • IP address;
  • Enquiry date and time;
  • Time zone difference to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT);
  • Enquiry content (the exact web page accessed);
  • Access status/HTTP status code;
  • Data volume transmitted in each case;
  • Information of the Website generating the enquiry;
  • Browser information;
  • OS and its interface;
  • Browser language and version.

This data is retained for security reasons (e.g. for investigation of misuses or prevention of fraud) for a maximum of seven days and deleted afterwards. The data which has to be retained in specific incidents for evidence for a longer time period will be deleted after the specific incident is finally clarified.

 

2.b Comments

We don’t allow comments, and we disabled the using of avatars: Therefore, we don’t collect personal data in this section.

 

2.c Contacting us by using email

You can contact us by using email-addresses provided on our website. In this case, we store your personal data transmitted with the email. Please be conscious, that unencrypted emails sent over the web are not adequately secured to unauthorized attention of a third party.

The handling of the personal data of such a mail contact only serves us for processing the communication and is the base of your agreement (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DSGVO). We do not pass these data without your approval.

The transferred data will be stored until you recant your agreement. Alternatively, when you demand to delete the data or the necessity for storing the data doesn’t consist any longer. We delete the data but for any operation of law, e.g. record retention periods.

We don’t offer a contact form, so we don’t demand personal data in this case.

We have set links to websites of other site owners. Contents, design or functions of those websites are standing outside of our influence. For obtaining more information about data protection on those sites, you’ll get directly from the owners of the third-party websites.

 

4 Cookies

Session cookies are deleted automatically when you close your browser. Session cookies are used, for instance, to retain certain information during your session.

Permanent cookies are deleted automatically after a preset period which can differ from cookie to cookie. With those cookies, you can access our website faster and more conveniently, and you do not have to make specific settings again, e.g. specify the relevant language. Permanent cookies are automatically deleted upon the expiry of a defined period of time following the date on which you visited the site or domain where the cookie was set. You can delete the cookies at any time using the security settings of your browser.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me,” your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.

 

5 Analytics

We permanently have the legitimate desire to improve our website and its usability. The work with personal visitor data allows us the analysis of the users’ behavior on our website. Because of this analysis, we can get information about the usage of single components of our website.

For this evaluation, we use the tool of our provider. This software is running exclusively on the server of our website in Germany. Storage of personal data only occurs in that place.

 

6 Whom we share your data with

We don’t share your data with external parties. We don’t link to social media platforms, and we don’t use media platforms like YouTube or services like GoogleMaps.

 

7 How long we retain your data

For users that register on our website (like our editorial journalists), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

 

8 What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any information you have provided to us.

You can also request that we erase and rectify any personal data we hold about you. The erasure does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. You have the right to restrict and object to the processing of your personal data and the right of data portability. You have the right to withdraw consent at any time where the processing is based on point (a) of Article 6(1) GDPR, without affecting the lawfulness of processing based on consent before your withdrawal.  We don’t use any kind of automated decision-making, including profiling, referred to in Article 22(1) and (4).
